One of my favorite songs of all time is Nelly’s “Just A Dream” (2010). (I also really liked the mix with Bruno Mars’ “Just The Way You Are” in the movie Pitch Perfect.) In tribute to this work, I wrote my own lyrics, based on my own life and endeavors pursing my truth. If you’re a fan of the artist or the original song, I hope you sing along with these alternative lyrics in the back of your mind! Enjoy ✨

Editor’s Note: When I was fourteen, I started writing poems – mostly about love, courtesy of high school hormones. I’ve recently resurrected this passion and plan to post my new (and maybe some old) work here as part of my weekly schtick on sarasalam.co. I hope you find (insert positive emotion here) in them. 💖

…what will see me free…

I was thinking about truth, thinking about me,

thinking about home, what will set me free.

Open my eyes, yeah, it was only just a dream.

So I travel back, to my woes,

to my plans, to my ohms,

Open my eyes, yeah,

It was only just a dream.

…cause I can still feel it in the air…

I was at the top, now it’s like I’m lapsing progress.

Number one spot,

Now it’s like I’m fake, I’m raw-less,

I swear, now, I am aimless,

Knowing I can’t pave my way, yeah.

Now I am confused, I am hurt, I am weak,

Should’ve looked inside, should’ve reigned my identity.

Cause I can still feel it in the air,

See my winding path, trying to build my life aware

Of my truth and my peace, my wisdom and my grief,

It leaves me with unease,

Now I’m praying for what is meant to be.

…I was thinking about truth…

I was thinking about truth, thinking about me,

thinking about home, what will set me free.

Open my eyes, yeah, it was only just a dream.

So I travel back, to my woes,

to my plans, to my ohms,

Open my eyes, yeah,

It was only just a dream.
